Land Ark teams are working hard to help build the future of Westport as a thriving village and a great place to call home.
We love building community and we hurt when others are hurting. One week ago hurricane Fiona made landfall in Canada and lives in the affected areas have been lost, property damaged and future plans disrupted. And a week later Ian has wreaked havoc on the lives of millions of people in the US.
We also know the value of neighbour helping neighbour – it’s powerful.
The communities that surround the damaged areas are rallying together to support their neighbours. It is always remarkable to hear of restaurants cooking meals for free and workers from every trade stepping in to make a dent in the massive debris.
Since 1970 Samaritans Purse has been assisting victims of war, natural disaster, poverty and disease through its network of volunteers and trained professionals who donate their time to improve the lives of others.
As a respected participant in disaster relief, Samaritan’s Purse has begun operations in Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Florida in the wake of the damage wrought by Fiona and Ian. The Red Cross is also beginning operations in these regions.
There will be many challenges over the coming months and years to rebuild these communities. It will take energy away from other endeavours and the focus will be on returning homes and neighbourhoods to their previous form and function.
We chose to highlight Samaritan’s Purse as they have one of their Disaster Relief Units—a specialized tractor trailer equipped with safety equipment, chain saws, tarps and clean-up equipment—being transported to P.E.I., in the Charlottetown region. The Red Cross will also begin helping those in need in Canada and the United States.
If you have resources to give, please consider making a donation to a charity partner that is working in the region of Atlantic Canada and Florida. If you’d like to help Samaritan’s Purse you can make a donation here and the Red Cross here.
