Finding Your Happy Place

At Watercolour Westport, we’ve always known there is something special about the pace of life here, even when the snow falls. Now, the latest research confirms it:

Rural Canadians are consistently happier than their urban counterparts.

According to recent Statistics Canada data, there is a distinct “happiness gap” between city and country living. Here is what the research found:

  • Higher Life Satisfaction: In 2023, roughly 59% of rural residents reported high life satisfaction, compared to only 49% of those living in major cities.
  • Stronger Connection: Rural residents are nearly four times more likely to know their neighbours—a connection that keeps our community warm all winter long.
  • The “Slow” Advantage: Shorter commutes mean more time for what matters—like enjoying a sunset over the lake, even when it’s frozen, rather than sitting in city traffic.

ACTIVE WINTER LIVING FOR ALL AGES

Westport is a true winter wonderland designed for active living at every age. Families can step right outside their doors to explore the Hilltop Park right here in Watercolour, perfect for a crisp winter hike or a snowy afternoon adventure.

For those who crave the roar of the crowd and the excitement of competition, there’s nothing quite like catching a Westport Rideaus hockey game at the WTC (Westport Community Centre). It’s the heart of our village’s winter spirit! Check their calendar for home games, every Friday evening in March @ 8pm.

For our older residents looking to stay engaged and warm indoors, WASA is a purely social group that organizes monthly luncheons for its members at The Cove. Typically there is a guest speaker who gives a 15-20 minute presentation on a topic of interest and relevance to its senior members. For special events such as Christmas, some type of live entertainment, usually musical, is featured.

Westport Senior Living, on the other hand, sponsors many very interesting senior-focused educational events and these events also contain a wonderful social component. WSL offers programs such as Healthy Aging workshops, the Connected Canadians series & What’s Cooking Westport (with Country Roads). They also host a coffee club and a walking group, both of which meet twice a week.

The rural advantage isn’t just a feeling—it’s a fact. We are so glad to be part of a community that prioritizes well-being, connection, and the joy of every season.

You can find a better place to call home. It’s the Watercolour life that awaits you in a home of fine craftsmanship and a community nestled in nature’s playground.
